Partner Spotlight

At 47th Avenue, we believe that collaboration is key to addressing complex challenges effectively and we're grateful to partner with so many impactful organizations. Each featured partner represents a unique perspective, expertise, and approach to tackling important issues. By highlighting a different partner each month, we aim to showcase the collective efforts being made and inspire others to join us in creating a better future for all children and families in King County.

May Spotlight:

Families of Color Seattle

This month, we are proud to shine a spotlight on Families of Color Seattle. Since 2013, Families of Color Seattle (FOCS- pronounced "folks") has grown from a group of BIPOC mothers in conversation about raising their children into a nonprofit building collective power through intersectional solidarity. Led by BIPOC parents who are deeply committed to creating a nurturing and supportive environment for families of color, FOCS seeks to provide families of color with the tools, resources, and community they need to thrive in a world marked by systemic racism.

Peer-Led Parent Groups: Cultivating Resilience and Connection

Central to FOCS' mission are its Peer-Led Parent Groups, which serve as the cornerstone of its programming. These groups offer a safe space for dialogue, reflection, and empowerment, focusing on topics such as racism, identity, and parenting strategies for raising resilient and compassionate children of color. What sets FOCS apart is its commitment to peer leadership, with experienced parents guiding and supporting newcomers on their journey towards growth and self-discovery.

Family Programming: Nurturing Bonds, Virtually and In-Person

Amidst the challenges posed by the pandemic, FOCS swiftly adapted its programming to ensure families remained connected and supported. Transitioning seamlessly to virtual platforms, FOCS continues to offer a diverse array of workshops, panel discussions, and community events aimed at promoting awareness, education, and family engagement. Whether it's participating in Black Maternal Health Week or enjoying Summer Park Days, FOCS invites families to come together, learn, and celebrate in solidarity.

Systems Change Work: Advocating for Equity and Justice

Beyond its direct services, FOCS is actively engaged in systems change work, advocating for institutional reform and dismantling systemic racism at its core. Through consulting workshops, partnerships with like-minded organizations, and advocacy initiatives focused on reproductive justice, health, and education equity, FOCS empowers communities to enact meaningful change and create a more just and equitable society for all.

In highlighting FOCS as our Partner Spotlight for the month, we honor not only their unwavering dedication to serving families of color but also their tireless efforts to effect systemic change and build a more inclusive and equitable future. Together, we stand in solidarity with FOCS as they continue to inspire, uplift, and empower families in our community and beyond.
